Alarming increase in ATM crime

Brussels, 28/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - Annual cash machine losses in Europe are approaching €500 million, an ENISA report (European Network and Information Security Agency) warns. There was a 149% increase in this type of crime in 2008 following the rapid growth of cash machines (ATMs) in more remote locations, such as convenience stores, airports and petrol stations. The report notes that 72% of ATMs are to be found in only five countries: the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France and Italy. “Cash taken illegally from ATMs is still the preferred method for criminals who obtain pin numbers using a wide range of techniques from 'shoulder surfing' to complex skimming techniques,” ENISA says. ENISA is counting on increased consumer awareness to combat this scourge and is informing consumers of the risks so that they will take simple precautions, such as not allowing others to see the keypad when entering their PIN and showing caution at the first sign of anything suspicious, says Andrea Pirotti, Executive Director of ENISA. Financial institutions, police and payment schemes are recommended to provide further information and advice. (I.L./transl.rt)
