Brussels, 28/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 15 October, the Cercle Wresinski (ATD Quart Monde) and the Cercle Benenson (Amnesty Belgium) are holding a conference on the theme of “Poverty, denial of human rights, a question of justice?” The event, marking World Anti-Poverty Day on 17 October, will take place at the ULB, avenue Paul Héger, Brussels at 8.00pm. World Anti-Poverty Day, set up by Father Joseph Wresinski in 1987 and officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992, is marked by all the European institutions.
The conference will assess progress made over the last 20 years. They will consider how the powerful driver that is human rights can be used to eradicate poverty. Taking part will be Françoise Tulkens, judge at the European Court of Human Rights and president of the Second Section, and Georges de Kerchove, lawyer and member of ATD Quart Monde.
