28/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 28 September, European Commissioner for Justice, Liberty and Security Jacques Barrot travelled to Belgrade to take part in a regional conference on organised crime in the Western Balkans. The main purpose of his trip was to discuss police and justice reforms currently underway in Serbia, and the country's progress in the fight against organised crime. Mr Barrot also raised the issue of the liberalisation of the visa regime in the Schengen zone and the Balkan states, particularly Serbia. The national reports regarding the state of progress in the necessary criteria for the removal of visas were submitted to the Commission on 25 September. The Serbian authorities are confident that their country has met all of the necessary criteria. (B.C./transl.fl)
