18/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On 16 September, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a regulation to incorporate into Community law the recommendations of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), a regional fisheries organisation. The European Community, along with Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Romania, Slovenia and Spain are contracting parties to the GFCM. Until recently, recommendations adopted by the GFCM were transposed into the Community on a temporary basis, through the annual regulations on fishing opportunities. The permanent nature of these recommendations required a more permanent legal instrument. It was, therefore, appropriate to transpose the recommendations by means of a single legislative act.
