Brussels, 18/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Presidency of the EU Council has reacted to press information citing witnesses of an attack by Yemenite government forces on a refugee camp in northern Yemen on Wednesday, an attack that left nearly one hundred dead. Sweden has thus expressed its deep concern on behalf of the EU27 and reiterates its call to the parties of their obligation to take all measures necessary to protect civilians. The government of Yemen, which reproaches the rebels for wanting to separate the north of the country and establish a Shiite state there, does not confirm the attack and denies the presence of refugee camps in that area. Human Rights Watch (HRW) says the Yemen government must open an investigation on what must have been “a terrifying attack” against civilians, said Joe Stork, HRW Deputy Director for the Middle East, in a press release.
