Brussels, 26/08/2009 (Agence Europe) - 57 Eritrean migrants were rescued by Italy off the coast of Lampedusa on Tuesday 25 August. It would appear that the Maltese navy had previously spotted the migrants about 20 miles south of Lampedusa, but did not go to their rescue. The Maltese simply provided them with lifejackets before escorting them to Italian territorial waters, according to Ansa reports.
