IFHR denounces unanimous African Union support for president El Béchir who is subject to international arrest warrant

Brussels, 06/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 5 July the International Federation of Human Rights (IFHR) expressed its “indignation and disappointment” with the decision of the heads of state and government from the African Union to give their unanimous support to Omar El Béchir. The latter is under arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his alleged responsibility in serious crimes committed in Darfur. The IFHR refers to a resolution adopted by the African Union Conference on 3 July in Syrte, Libya. Questioned about this subject, a source close to the European Commission declared: “We are taking note of the situation and will see how we should respond”. (A.N./transl.rh)
