THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/european council

10/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - As part of the preparation for next week's European Council (18-19 June), Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer continued his round of capitals, visiting Stockholm on Wednesday, where he met Swedish Prime Minister (and incoming President of the European Council) Fredrik Reinfeldt. On Friday 12 June, Fischer will travel to Paris for a meeting with Nicolas Sarkozy. On Monday 15 June, he will meet UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London. “I assure you that my main concern is to bring the Czech Presidency to an end without upset and to continue with the work carried out effectively and successfully by Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek,” Fischer told the Conference of European Affairs Committees (COSAC) on 10 June. On Thursday 11 June, Nicolas Sarkozy will host a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Paris. The two leaders will discuss all the issues on the agenda at the European Council, in particular the economic crisis, the outcome of the European elections and the legal guarantees to be given to Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty, an Elysée press release says.
