03/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 29 May, the Commission refuted claims by the Greens group in the European Parliament that it was considering re-introducing the possibility of authorising cross-border movement of mega-lorries (over 25.5 metres long and 60 tonnes in weight). The Commission says that the position of Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani has not changed on this issue and his staff are continuing to gather information in order to assess whether or not to proceed with a revision of the current directive (96/53/EC) which restricts the length of lorries to 18 metres. It is necessary for the Commission to continue its analysis during the course of this year, and it is unlikely that it will have sufficient data to enable it to decide whether or not to revise the directive, says an official communiqué published by the Commission on Friday of last week.
