29/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is currently working on the case involving repatriation to Libya of several hundred migrants intercepted in the Mediterranean by the Italian authorities. In a letter addressed on Thursday 28 May to the chairman of the EP committee on civil liberties, Gérard Deprez (ALDE, Belgium), European Immigration Commissioner Jacques Barrot stressed: “My services are for now gathering information on these events and analysing questions of substance (…) You will of course receive an answer as soon as we have finalised our analysis”. Mr Deprez had written to the vice-president on 13 May asking him what the Commission's point of view was on this matter, given its role as guardian of the treaties (EUROPE 9903). (B.C./transl.jl)
