Brussels, 29/05/2009 (Agence Europe) -ACP states (Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific) and the EU agree that the ACP-EU Council's adoption of a joint statement on climate change and development, and a resolution on the economic and financial crisis, is a political success. Both documents were adopted on Friday 29 May 2009 and represent a common position of the 105 countries from the Northern and Southern hemispheres on the tangible outcomes they are expecting from the G20 and a joint pledge to work together to achieve a “satisfactory conclusion” of the Copenhagen conference in December 2009 on the post-2012 situation vis-à-vis climate change. Welcoming the EU's desire to pledge to reduce industrialised countries' greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020, the Council urged all industrial countries to make comparable emissions reduction pledges and urged developing countries to contribute in line with their responsibilities and capacities. No figures were given for developing countries or for the funding they would need to adapt to climate change. The Council stressed the need, however, for suitable, predictable and available financial support to implement the impending Copenhagen Agreement and to mobilise additional public and private funding for national strategies and action to reduce the carbon footprint and adjust to climate change. The next joint Council will take place in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) in 2010. (A.N./transl.fl)
