Antonio Tajani confirms commitment to present action plan to promote urban mobility

Brussels, 12/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - In coming months, the European Commission is expected to adopt the action plan on urban mobility, European Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani announced on Tuesday 12 May. Speaking at the opening of the Velo-City conference for promoting cycling as a healthy way to travel in towns, Tajani said the plan will include a series of actions to cover not only passenger transport but also goods transport. It will cover all modes of transport - including cycling. The Commission above all provides for: - the development of a strategy for the “Civitas Futura” programme that will take over from the Civitas initiative aimed at promoting the establishment in towns of clean, sustainable transport that does not consume much energy; - completion of studies on the interoperability of public transport systems and on “green areas”; - and funding to pilot projects resulting from the call for tenders closed in March, and which propose solutions in areas considered a priority by the Commission (cycling and walking, goods transport, green zones and actions to promote public transport). The commissioner also announced the publication of a new White Paper on transport, that should be prepared for 2010, and the publication in June of a communication on the future of transport.
