Brussels, 28/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 27 April, the European Parliament civil liberties committee adopted four proposals to improve how the European asylum system works and enhance asylum seekers' rights. The report by Antonio Masip Hidalgo (PES, Spain), adopted by 33 votes to one, with one abstention, seeks to improve minimum standards for receiving asylum seekers. The report by Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert (ALDE, Netherlands), adopted unanimously, seeks to improve the 2003 Dublin regulation. The report by Nicolae Vlad Popa (EPP-ED, Romania), adopted by 28 votes to four, with three abstentions, aims to improve how the Eurodac fingerprint database works. Finally, the report by Jean Lambert (Greens/EFA, UK) endorses the setting up of a European Asylum Support Office.
