Luxembourg, 27/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - Monday's External Relations Council held an exchange of views on the political situation in Moldova after the election on 5 April (won by the Communist party in power) and the violent clashes that followed the announcement of results challenged by the opposition. Ministers above all heard Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, present his report on his visit to Chisinau on 24 April. Ministers called on the Moldovan president, Vladimir Voronine, to keep the two commitments taken at his meeting with Mr Solana last week, namely to: - launch a political dialogue with the opposition by 5 May (date when the new Moldovan parliament will be constituted); - open up to members of the opposition and to members of the international organisations active in the field of human rights the fact-finding commission set in place by Mr Voronine to examine the violent events that occurred after the election results were announced. The EU is “very concerned by human rights violations” in Moldova, the Czech minister for foreign affairs, Karel Schwarzenberg told the press. “We expect the country to behave in a European way”, he said.
