24/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - The publication on the iInternet (http://www.parlorama.eu ) of a classification of the MEPs on the basis of their attendance at meetings of the European Parliament has come in for very strong criticism from a number of MEPs, partly due to its "accounting logic", which does not take account of the choices which the MEP must make between various activities: taking part in a meeting of the committee or delegation taking place at the same time, meeting with the voters or taking part in meetings with representatives of other institutions and interest groups, responsibilities within groups and political parties, etc. The pressure brought to bear by the Italian radicals for more transparency is, however, gradually producing its effects. Information on the MEPs' attendance at the work of the European Parliament should soon be more easily accessible, as called for in the report by Marco Cappato. The decision to this effect may be taken by the bureau very early next month. (O.J./transl.fl)
