Winners of 3rd Sustainable Energy Week Awards

Brussels, 11/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - Of the 250 which entered this year's competition, six projects in five categories were, on Tuesday 10 February, awarded prizes as part of the 3rd Sustainable Energy Week. The Sustainable Energy Europe Awards reward the most ambitious and most innovative sustainable energy projects. PlaNet Finance Group (France) was awarded the prize for Co-operation Programmes for its project enabling rural communities in Bangladesh and Indonesia to gain access to micro-financing schemes for solar electricity systems. PE International (Germany) took the prize for Demonstration and Dissemination Projects for its fleet of 47 hydrogen-powered buses, HyFLEET: CUTE, running in 10 cities on three continents. In the category Market Transformation Including Voluntary Commitments, Sonae Sierra (Portugal), a civic architecture specialist, seeking to incorporate sustainable energy practices into the development and management of buildings, took the award. Mobiel 21 (Belgium) took the honours in Promotional Communication and Educational Actions for its Connect project, a traffic management game designed to raise awareness among pupils and parents of safe and environmentally-friendly forms of transport. Finally, joint award winners in the Sustainable Energy Communities category were Consorzio Produttori Agricoli Acque Minerali Umbre s.r.l., a consortium of regional farmers and local municipalities in Umbria (Italy) aiming to produce energy using local wood and renewable agricultural biomass, and Thurrock Energy Partnership, Climate Energy Ltd.
