13/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - If British Conservatives were to come back to power in the United Kingdom after early elections possibly held this year, they would call a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty in October, says David Cameron, Tory leader, in The Financial Times of 13 January. If this were the case, the possible future prime minister says, he would recommend that the British reject the new Union treaty. Mr Cameron considers he can win such a referendum. A British “no” vote would be the final blow to the treaty, irrespective of the results of the second Irish referendum (scheduled for September or October) and the parliamentary debate in the Czech Republic. Cameron believes there is a 50-50 chance that Prime Minister Gordon Brown will call early elections in 2009, perhaps even by the end of April. The United Kingdom has already ratified the Lisbon Treaty but until the treaty is formally approved by all 27 EU member states, a new government in London can still withdraw British ratification.
