Brussels, 07/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 6 January, Czech Deputy Prime Minister with responsibility for European Affairs Alexandr Vondra, Culture Minister Václav Jehlicka and Deputy Foreign Minister Helena Bambasová presented the Czech Republic's cultural programme. Over 600 cultural events, costing more than 22.5 million Czech crowns, are planned. Some, such as the “Eurofestivals”, which will coincide with ministerial meetings held in the various regions of the Czech Republic, will be for the general public, while others will be for delegates from other member states and other foreign guests. Almost 100 will take place in the Czech Republic, 60 will be held in Brussels and some 450 will take place elsewhere in Europe and around the world. Two anniversaries of major importance will be occur during the Czech Presidency and will influence the cultural calendar: the 20th anniversary of the fall of the “Iron Curtain” and the 5th anniversary of the biggest enlargement in the history of the European Union. Innovation and creativity will be celebrated throughout 2009, the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, and will give rise to several events. Exhibitions will also be held recalling life under a totalitarian regime, paying homage to the victims of the holocaust and to encourage reflection on the motto of the Czech Presidency “Europe without borders”.
