Major extension of Natura 2000 network

Brussels, 12/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - Europe's rich tapestry of protected flora and fauna grew further today with a major extension of the Natura 2000 network of protected natural areas. 769 new sites covering a total area of 95,522 km2 have been added.

Most of the sites are in the new member states, in Bulgaria, Romania and Poland, and include areas in the Black Sea and the Steppic bio-geographical regions. The Black Sea region takes in the Danube delta, which is one of the largest...
