EU takes steps to avoid spread of classical scrapie

Brussels, 27/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 26 November, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health gave its backing to a European Commission proposal for a targeted ban on the use of milk from flocks infected with scrapie to feed ruminants (cattle, goats and sheep). No further restrictions are required on the use of milk from infected flocks for human consumption. Such milk may continue to be used in cheese making. On 6 November, European scientists concluded that milk and milk products from flocks affected by classical scrapie could carry a risk (see EUROPE 9779). Furthermore, EU experts advised that the Community programme for eradicating scrapie be reviewed: sheep and goats should be slaughtered within 18 months of the disease being diagnosed.
