Iriba, 03/11/2008 (Agence Europe) -Humanitarian workers present in the region of Wadi Fira (East Chad) have announced that it was not security reasons which led MSF (Médecins sans frontiers or Doctors without Borders) to leave the town of Iriba and the refugee camp of Iridimi, where MSF-Luxembourg had set up a hospital and health centre, in May 2008. According to two independent humanitarian sources, their departure was due to an internal problem, related to the reduction in staff salaries. The problem has since been resolved, and the MSF truck stopped off in this region at the end of September. The health centre in the Iridimi camp has since been taken over by the organisation ADSK. According to one of its staff, there are currently no serious health problems in the camp, which is home to more than 18,300 people. Unlike the situation in 2004, the year in which the camp was set up, cases of malnutrition are extremely rare and the situation appears to have become stabilised. According to MSF, over the last 10 months there have been 24 serious incidents involving its staff. The last two of these occurred in early October in Adé (operational zone of the multi-national battalion centre of EUFOR) and in Goz Beida (Southern operational zone), where two MSF health centres were robbed by armed men, leading to a suspension of the group's activities in the region. MSF has, however, turned down the protection and assistance of EUFOR, the EU force deployed in the region. (A.By./trans.fl)
