Brussels, 03/11/2008 (Agence Europe) - At their "Gymnich"-type meeting in Marseilles on Monday 3 November, the foreign affairs ministers of the EU continued the talks they started in Avignon at the beginning of September on the reflection document they are to submit to the next American president - John McCain or Barrack Obama - to be voted into office on this Tuesday 4 November. Over six pages, the document sums up the position, hopes and proposals of the EU27 for the future American administration in five areas: - multilateralism; - the Middle East; - Afghanistan/Pakistan; - Russia; - the emerging powers (China, India and Brazil, etc). Bernard Kouchner, the French foreign affairs minister and chairman of the meeting (which was attended by High Representative Javier Solana and Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner) told the press that the document would be published "neither today, nor in its definitive form", which will be complete once the new American president takes up office on 20 January 2009. We published the content of a preliminary draft text drawn up by the French Presidency for the Avignon meeting (EUROPE 9746) and which will remain broadly unchanged. (H.B./transl.fl)
