EREC and Greenpeace want everything renewable by 2090

Brussels, 30/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) and Greenpeace are urging governments of the world to not massively abandon investing in the fight against climate change. In a study published on 27 October, the Energy Revolution, these two organisations argue that in combination with energy efficiency measures, renewables could cover half the planet's energy costs by 2050 and all of them by 2090, if the necessary investment is made for reducing consumption. $14,700bn in solar power, wind, geothermic and biomass by 2030 would see the internal renewables industry multiply its turnover by five, from €70 to 360bn and by reaching the size of the current fossil fuel industry today, by 2050. Investment is colossal but the authors of the study consider that by 2030, more than $18,000bn in spending on fossil fuels will be saved in the electricity sector alone. Investment in traditional fuels needs to be deducted too in an effort to respond to growing demand. Real additional costs from this choice could be borne by tax payers or the CO2 emissions rights trading industry but only for ten or fifteen years, until the cost of renewable production costs meets that for fossil fuels and then becomes less than the latter. According to the study, by multiplying by four the use of renewables in the energy, transport and heating sectors, CO2 emissions per head and per year cold be dived by four by 2050 on the condition that emerging countries like China and India take part in such an initiative. The report authors have only taken into account existing technology, as well as a growth in the world population of 50% and the cost of oil rising by 140 per barrel by 2050. The study was supported by the president of the GIEC, Rajendra Pachauri, who said that the study contents were rigorous. (http://www.erec.com and http://www.greenpeace.org ) (E.H./trans/rh)
