EU coordinates fight against cyber-crime

Brussels, 27/10/2008 (Agence Europe) -On Friday 24 October, the Member States of the EU decided to coordinate their fight against cyber-crime by centralising crimes involving the Internet, particularly child pornography, at Europol level. "We have decided to create a European platform to fight cyber-crime, a phenomenon which is growing extremely rapidly and which knows no frontiers", said the French Interior Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie, after her meeting with her European counterparts in Luxembourg. The objective is to ensure that operators of illegal Internet sites cannot slip from one country of the EU into another unnoticed, the Minister explained. European Commission has decided to allocate a budget of 300,000 euros to help this platform set up its activities, said Jacques Barrot, the Commissioner with responsibility for Justice, Security and Liberty. During their meeting in November, the ministers will commit to defining an action plan. (B.C./trans.fl)
