Brussels, 23/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Environment Council has formally adopted, without debate, the directive amending Directive 2006/66/EC on the selective collection and recycling of used batteries and accumulators, to clarify arrangements.
Batteries and accumulators which do not comply with Directive 2006/66/EC cannot be marketed in the EU after 28 September 2008, the date on which the previously mentioned directive came into effect. The clarification brought by the new directive (Article 6 §2) seeks to set out that batteries and accumulators legally marketed before that date, but which do not meet the requirements of Directive 2006/66/EC will not have to be withdrawn from the market or re-labelling.
This ensures legal security and guarantees the proper functioning of the internal market. (A.N./transl.rt)
