Luxembourg, 03/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EPSSCO Council (Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs) has formally adopted the Parliament and Council decision that will make 2010 the European year for combating poverty and social exclusion. Xavier Bertrand, President-in-Office of the Council, welcomed this decision which, far from being a declaration of principle, aims to make the debate and the positions of member states move forward in this field. “78 million people are threatened with poverty in Europe. It is an important decision to show that we are on course for reform and social cohesion throughout European Union territory. It is also a strong symbol as 2010 is the year when the Lisbon strategy expires”, the president stressed.
Speaking on behalf of the European Commission, Vladimir Spidla said: “Until now, we have not been able to reduce poverty worldwide. We want to help the most disadvantaged who have the right to a life of dignity and to play an active part in society in all member states. We want to highlight the examples of success and encourage social cohesion in all sectors, mainly in public administration. For this, we are suggesting an allocation of €17 million”. (A.N./transl.jl)
