EU to make compensation payments for fishing in Mauritanian waters

Brussels, 29/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - Despite August's coup in Mauritania, the European Commission announced on Monday 29 September, that all the conditions had been met so that the EU could make the compensation payments to the Mauritanian government, to allow EU fleets to fish in the waters of the region. “We have received a letter from the Mauritanian authorities which confirms that they will abide fully by the conditions of the fisheries agreement adopted by the Council before the coup,” said Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg. If the Council agrees, “we will try to get the green light from the College to make the payment” (of €86 million per year). European fisheries ministers have no objections to the payment of this financial compensation (that was, for a time, suspended). The EU has until 16 October to pay up. (L.C./transl.rt)
