Brussels, 29/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - Pending the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, which will give the European Parliament the power of co-decision on all subjects under the third pillar (police and legal cooperation in criminal matters), the MEPs hope to agree with the Council on the list of dossiers to be dealt with as a priority, particularly those on the fight against terrorism, cooperation in criminal matters, data protection, the fight against discrimination, legislative transparency, immigration and citizenship. The resolution on the Space of Security, Liberty and Justice, which was adopted on Thursday 25 September by 488 votes in favour, 88 against 19 abstentions, states the directions in which the EP hopes to take its work, and the way in which it hopes to cooperate with the other institutions. The MEPs presented the European Commission with a catalogue of proposals to be made during the transition period moving over to the Lisbon Treaty. By virtue of an amendment tabled by the EPP-ED, which was adopted by a small majority (268 votes in favour, 243 against nine abstentions), the resolution will not refer to the request initially made of the Commission to forward a proposal on voting rights of foreigners at local and European elections. The Council, for its part, is called upon to discuss the subjects to be dealt with under the regime of the current treaty, and those which must wait until the Parliament is able to take position in co-decision. Lastly, the MEPs wish to see the national parliaments closely associated with Community legislative work, as they will be called upon to play a decisive role once the Lisbon Treaty has entered into force.
