Brussels, 08/09/2008 (Agence Europe) -The College of the 27 European Commissioners will meet on the evening of Thursday 11 September and on Friday 12 September in the Abbey de la Ramée in Jodoigne (Wallonia, Belgium) to hold a debate, in a strictly informal and relaxed environment, on its political priorities to take it up to the end of October 2009, when the term in office of the Barroso Commission comes to an end. "The Commissioners will discuss how, against a turbulent economic and political background, they can maximise the work of the College during the 14 months it has left", a source at the Commission explained. A detailed working programme for this last year will be formally adopted and presented on 15 October. The leitmotiv of this Commission, which is to promote a "Europe of results" capable of making concrete responses to the specific concerns of the citizens (in the socio-economic field, but also in the field of the environment, energy security, etc), will remain key until the end of the mandate, this same source stressed. The work may continue beyond October 2009, as José Manuel Barroso is hoping to renew his mandate at the head of the Commission. Even though it will not encroach on the work of the next team, the current College nonetheless hopes to "prepare the ground" for the next Commission. (H.B./trans.fl)
