Adoption of four reports on multiannual programmes

Brussels, 04/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 2 September, during plenary session, the European Parliament adopted by a very large majority four reports by Katerina Batzeli (PES, Greece) relating to the implementation of multiannual programmes (2007-2013) in the field of culture, education, youth and citizenship. Given the European Commission's wish to simplify the necessary procedures for selecting potential beneficiaries of these programmes by reducing times of consultation for selection decisions, the Parliament considers it necessary to ensure it has a “right of control” and a “right to information” on implementation of legislative acts adopted in codecision, allowing it to possibly challenge measures envisaged by the Commission. In a concern, however, to ensure the swift unfolding of procedures, the Parliament agrees in these reports that the consultative procedure should be replaced, on condition that the Commission informs it immediately, as well as member states, of selection decisions taken within the programmes committee.
