Brussels, 29/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 29 August, the European Commission pointed out it welcomed the fact that Poland opened an inquiry into the CIA's secret prisons. The Polish public prosecutor's department recently opened investigations into the presumed existence of secret prisons of the American intelligence agency, the CIA, on Polish soil between 2003 and 2005 (EUROPE 9726). The Commission was informed by the Polish legal authorities on 5 August this year that such an inquiry had been initiated, said Ton van Lierop, from the institution's spokesman's office. “The Commission repeatedly stressed the need for member states concerned, such as Poland (and Romania), to begin indepth, independent and impartial inquiries to establish the truth”, he added. The Polish authorities will inform the Commission of the results of the investigation once it has been completed. (B.C./transl.jl)
