06/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - Following his meeting with Said Jalili, on Monday 4 August, the EU High Representative for CFSP received a letter from Tehran on the Iranian nuclear programme. On Wednesday, the Group of Six (China, US, France, United Kingdom, Russia and Germany) are expected to discuss the contents of the Iranian response to their offer of economic and political cooperation. Tehran's answer has been awaited since the meeting of 19 July in Geneva and is obviously not satisfactory. On Wednesday, the spokesperson from the French ministry of foreign affairs declared, “the purely procedural document we received does not provide the response expected from the 19 July meeting in Geneva”. The spokesperson also explained that the formula proposed by the Six for launching the negotiations (that on the double-freeze, Iran refrains from creating new centrifugal machines for enriching uranium and the Six refrains from imposing new sanctions) is clear and does not require further clarification.
