24/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EU anti-terrorist coordinator, Gilles de Kerchove, recently regretted the distinct lack of cooperation between the European Police Office (Europol) and the European agency responsible for fostering legal cooperation between member states (Eurojust). During a meeting with MEPs, Mr de Kerchove indicated that, “Eurojust has only cooperated in 2% of cases with Europol”. De Kerchove stated that in compliance with the Council of the EU's wishes, the two bodies are expected to amend their cooperation agreement. He also affirmed that Eurojust had to have more systematic access to Europol files. Although member states are on the right track with regard to Europol and Eurojust data exchange, the coordinator pointed out that, “Europol is sometimes informed about an investigation by reading the papers”. Mr de Kerchove also said that he was in favour of setting up a Supreme Muslim Council in the Union, based on the French or Belgian model. (B.C./trans/rh)
