Brussels, 20/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - Thomas Hammarberg, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, began a two-day visit to Rome on Thursday 19 June. During his visit, he will meet representatives from the Italian government with a view to tackling concerns stemming from the legislative package on security adopted in May. The commissioner's agenda will focus on the new government's policies on migration and on the situation of the Roma community. “I want to establish a dialogue with the new Berlusconi government”, Mr Hammarberg said in a press release. “I have received a number of reports on the recent developments in Italy on the situation of migrants and the Roma minority and would therefore want to form my own impression of the situation”, he added. In Italy, illegal immigration may soon be punishable by six months to four years' imprisonment. This is the most spectacular measure of the “security package” announced by the Italian government on 21 May. (B.C./transl.jl)
