Slovakia given official go-ahead to join euro

Brussels, 20/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU heads of state at the European Council decided on Thursday 19 June 2008 that Slovakia can join the eurozone on 1 January 2009. Noting that Slovakia met all the convergence criteria and the necessary legal obligations (see Europe 9657 and 9674), the European Council invited the ECOFIN Council to adopt the decision at its meeting on 8 July 2008. This will give Slovakia six months to prepare to become the 16th eurozone country. (A.B.)
