Amnesty denounces two-faced Europe

Brussels, 05/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - During the presentation of its 2008 report on Wednesday 28 May, Amnesty International regretted that “it is sadly true that Europe, which regards itself as a beacon of human rights, still embraces a yawning gap between rhetoric and reality, standards and application, principles and performances”. The NGO accused many European countries of complicity in the secret CIA rendition of suspected terrorists and their lack of political will to tell the truth about their collaboration. Amnesty also looked at the rule of law and human rights in EU member states and the toughening up of legislation on immigration and asylum in Belgium and France; expulsions by the British authorities of people representing a threat to national security, to countries that use torture; racism against the Roma people in Italy; and climates of intolerance in Lithuania and Poland towards sexual minorities. The 2008 Amnesty International report is a 464 page document on the human rights situation in 150 countries and regions (January - December 2007). Information: (http: //thereport.amnesty.org/).
