Commission wants to promote use of national electronic identity systems throughout EU

Brussels, 03/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the European Commission unveiled a pilot project aimed at ensuring cross-border recognition of national electronic identity (eID) systems and enabling easy access to public services in 13 member states. Some 30 million national eID cards are used by citizens to access a variety of public services (claiming social security and unemployment benefits or filing tax returns).
