Brussels, 02/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - In view of the timetable of evaluations underway and decisions to be made by the European Union, the Swiss government stated on Friday 30 May that it was hoping that it would be able to apply the Schengen regime to its borders from 5 and 6 December 2008. The application of controls to people in airports will coincide with the changing of flight timetables on 29 March 2009. The Council of the EU will have the last word on the subject. The Swiss government has also taken note of the fact that, as initially planned, it will not be possible to prepare first of all to be connected to the temporary SISone4all information system, then to access the modernised SIS II version, planned for the second half of 2009. At the end of May, the Council of the States, the upper chamber of the Swiss Federal Assembly, also gave its blessing to the implementation of two EU regulations to check illegal immigration. Both texts concern membership of the European external borders agency (Frontex) and the rapid border intervention teams (Rabit). (B.C.)
