Brussels, 29/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - During the Annual Review Conference on the International Compact with Iraq in Stockholm on 29 May, the EU reaffirmed that it shared the Iraqi government's objective of “a secure, stable, democratic, prosperous and unified Iraq where human rights are respected”. In a declaration published on Thursday, the EU recalls its support for the ICI and calls for the broad involvement of the international community, including Iraq's neighbors to help implement it. In concrete terms the EU is prepared to grant additional aid to reinforce the institutions and capacities of Iraq in an effort to harness the countries' own resources. The declaration also explains that the EU is determined to conclude negotiations as soon as possible on the agreement on trade and cooperation, foster cooperation in energy and increase the EU's diplomatic presence in Bagdad. The EU27 are also committed to provide additional aid to improve the humanitarian situation for displaced Iraqis in Iraq and neighboring countries. (H.B.)
