Broadband access and combating unwanted mail central to forthcoming French Presidency priorities

Brussels, 21/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - French Secretary of State for Industry and Consumption Luc Chatel announced on Wednesday 21 May that during the French Presidency he wanted to launch discussion on “the relevance of a right of access” to broadband internet in the countries of the EU, AFP has said. Chatel “proposes to begin … discussions on the relevance of a right of access to broadband, at an affordable price, across the whole of the EU and under terms specific to the conditions in each member state”. During the French Presidency, which begins on 1 July, he also wants to launch a discussion at European level on “ways to combat the spread of the unwanted selling by SMS and attempted fraud by mobile telephone”. The timetable set by the French takes on board the European Commission's DG Information Society and Media priorities for action to promote broadband internet access across Europe and to combat unwanted mail (“spam”). The Council of Ministers has just given its backing to the Commission communication on media literacy, which seeks to make internet users aware of the digital content available to them. (I.L.)
