21/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - Turkey could become a member of the EU around 2020 if it continues the reforms that are taking place, said Commissioner Olli Rehn in an interview with German Daily Die Welt on 21 April. “If it maintains its reform programme consistently, I would expect Turkey to be in a position to join the EU in 10 to 15 years,” he said. Rehn also announced that negotiations on two new chapters (company law and intellectual property) would be opened with Ankara on 17 June after the negotiating meeting, originally scheduled for 21 April, had to be cancelled because of lack of progress made (see EUROPE 9646). The commissioner said that other chapters, including energy, could be opened in the latter half of the year. As expected (see EUROPE 9646), Croatia opened two new chapters this Monday. (H.B.)
