16/04/2008 (Agence Europe) -" I am the leading light in the Commission against tax harmonisation", Charlie McCreevy, the European commissioner for the internal market, told a meeting of the Cork Business Association (Ireland), as reported by the Irish Examiner of 12 April. He was reacting to an announcement made by Christine Lagarde, the French finance minister, at the Brussels Tax Forum, that France would make the harmonisation of the corporate tax base one of the priorities of its Presidency of the Council of the EU (see EUROPE 9638). Mr McCreevy also confirmed that he had no intention of joining the Irish government which will be formed after the resignation, on 6 May, of Prime Minister Bertie Ahern (see EUROPE 9634). (M.B.)
