Brussels, 15/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - During a visit to Paris on 10 April, the leader of the European Liberal Democrats (ALDE) at the European Parliament, Graham Watson (UK), criticised the lack of ambition of the European immigration pact raised by France. The pact's sectoral approach is not good, Mr Watson said, after his meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The meeting between the two men took place in the context of preparations for the French EU Council Presidency. Although the pact project focuses on combating illegal immigration and strengthening border controls, the ALDE group's leader believes the approach to be adopted is quite different. In the field of European immigration policy, it is necessary to have a comprehensive view of things, he said, reported by Euractiv. Mr Watson nonetheless acknowledged that the shortage of labour and the decline in the population mean that a common process should be adopted as a matter of urgency. Following in Mr Watson's wake, nine MEPs from across the political spectrum took part in drafting a pamphlet, in which they set out solutions for facing the challenges raised by immigration.
