Brussels, 09/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR) wants a Liberal to hold at least one of the Union's four future key posts. Decisions on how the four posts in question - president of the European Council, EU high representative for foreign affairs and security, Commission president and Parliament president - are to be allocated should be taken end 2008/early 2009 or during 2009. “The Liberal family must be represented in key EU functions”, ELDR President Annemie Neyts, MEP of Belgian nationality, said after an informal mini-summit of the party in Finland on 6-7 April. ELDR calls for “sound and fair division of power in the EU”, said Finland's Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, who hosted the meeting. “The Liberals will be active in the negotiating process”, he announced. Two Liberal leaders were cited in the past among possible candidates to the post of president of the European Council: Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Guy Verhofstadt of Belgium. Both say they are not candidates. (H.B.)
