20/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - On 14 March, the European Commission presented the European Parliament and Council with a draft directive on “insurance for civil liability for motor vehicles and checks on obligation of insuring this liability”. This proposal aims to bring the five existing directives on the subject into a single text ((72/166/EEC, 84/5/EEC, 90/232/EEC, 2000/26/CE and 2005/14/CE), including the amendments made over the years. The Commission is therefore proposing a “codification” exercise dictated by the objective of obtaining clarification and simplification of Community legislation. In other words, the substance of the codified texts will not be subject to amendment.
