Brussels, 04/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - In an open letter addressed to the heads of state and government meeting in summit on 13 and 14 March in Brussels, the Platform of European Social NGOs (Social Platform) calls on them to be firm in ensuring that: (1) an “ambitious” social agenda is adopted in 2008; (2) that the Lisbon strategy for growth and employment is renamed “Lisbon strategy for growth, employment and social inclusion” and that a clause on active social insertion be included in the guidelines on employment (as advocated by Anne Van Lancker (PES, Belgium) (see EUROPE 9611); (3) that legislation is rapidly adopted aimed at increasing protection against all forms of discrimination, improving protection of workers and promoting reconciliation between family, private and professional life; and (4) that all forms of democracy are actively promoted at European level. The Social Platform believes the March 2008 summit is the last opportunity for restoring citizens' faith in Europe before the 2009 elections. It is for this reason that it makes a last appeal to the heads of state and government, urging them to take strong social action. For details see: http://www.socialplatform.org (G.B.)
