MEPs in favour of interinstitutional agreement

Brussels, 29/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EP's committee on constitutional affairs supports the European Commission in its effort to conclude an interinstitutional agreement with the Council and the European Parliament with a view to improving EU communication policy (EUROPE 9514). This was announced by Jo Leinen (SPD) during an exchange of views with the vice-president of the Commission, Margot Wallström, on 27 February. Some member states are still reticent about going along this track because they fear a common approach at EU level would restrict their own means of communication with their citizens, Ms Wallström explained. This, however, is a “misunderstanding” as no-one wishes to restrict communication activity, or create a new Community policy, she stressed. The aim is to create “synergies”, define “common priorities” and to have a “more consistent approach” in communicating with citizens on Europe, she added. Richard Corbett (British Labour member) called for communication policy to target the “immediate correction of false information” diffused by some media, especially in the United Kingdom. To reach the maximum number of citizens, one must use “seductive” television programmes, Carlos Carnero (Socialist, Spain) states, suggesting that the EU should promote cooperation with member states' public television channels.
