Brussels, 26/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Oscar for the best foreign language film was awarded on Sunday to the Austrian-German co-production "The Counterfeiters" (Die Fälscher), a film co-funded by the EU's MEDIA 2007 programme and directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky. The European Commission is pleased to announced that MEDIA 2007 seeks to make European cinema more competitive and help films that would otherwise not get seen abroad, acquire an international standing. There were three other French films supported by MEDIA figuring high on the nominations list: Persepolis", "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and La Vie en Rose" (La Môme). The latter) won an Oscar for the best actress in a leading role - Marion Cotillard as legendary French singer Edith Piaf - and one for the best Make-up. The total contribution from the EU for these 4 films alone amounted to €2.629.331. "The Counterfeiters" received €654.980 and “La Vie en Rose" got €1.177.584. This is the third time in a row that European cinema has won an Oscar. The Lives of Others" (Das Leben der Anderen), won an Oscar last year and in 2006 the French film "March of the Penguins" (La marche de l'Empereur won the Oscar for the Best Documentary Film. (I.L.)
