Hans-Gert Pöttering in New York to participate in panel at UN General Assembly on post-2012 period

Brussels, 08/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering will be in New York from 10-12 February to take part in a panel at the United Nations General Assembly on climate change. “Addressing Climate Change - the United Nations and the World at Work” is the theme of the debate.

The international negotiations on a global scheme against global warming after 2012, which is due to be launched no later than April 2008 (in accordance with the Bali roadmap), will serve as a backdrop to the discussions.

Stepping up the fight against climate change and the period post-2012 were also at the centre of Hans-Gert Pöttering's discussions in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukudo, representatives of the Parliament and Emperor Akihito.

The president of the European Parliament will use the opportunity of his visit to New York to participate in high level meetings. Among others he will meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (A.N.)
