EU must act on discrimination against Roma

Brussels, 01/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - MEPs want the EU to take action on the problem of discrimination against the Roma, who number more than 10 million in the Union. A European strategy for the Roma should be put in place quickly, says a Parliament resolution adopted on Thursday 31 January by 510 votes to 36, with 67 abstentions. “Despite (repeated) resolutions, we have still not experienced any changes in the work of the Commission that could affect the lives of the Roma communities in Europe,” said Viktoria Mohacsi (ALDE, Hungary) in a press release after the vote. “All member states have to create an action plan at national level on Roma integration,” she went on. Parliament said that Roma communities continue to suffer discrimination and condemned the “anti-Gypsyism” of extremist groups. It called on the European Commission to assess how well commitments are being implemented and the current situation of Roma people in all EU member states. MEPs maintained that the Roma holocaust (Porajmos) “deserves full recognition”. They called on the Commission to increase efforts to integrate the Roma through positive measures in housing, health, education and employment. Parliament called on the Commission for example, to support programmes to end the slums that these people live in, and to end the forced sterilisation of Roma women. Over more than 20 years, the Parliament has adopted numerous resolutions urging the Commission and the Council to act to help integrate the Roma. (B.C.)
